AMI to Provide OpenBMC Solutions in Support of Microsoft “Project Olympus” Hyperscale Server Platform Design

NORCROSS, GEORGIA / SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA, USA – AMI, a global leader in BIOS and UEFI firmware, server and remote management tools, data storage products and unique solutions based on the Linux® and Android™ operating systems, is pleased to announce its intention to provide OpenBMC solutions for the Intel®-based “Project Olympus” hyperscale server platform design contributed by Microsoft Corporation to the Open Compute Project (OCP).

OpenBMC is an open, standards-based BMC management protocol for next-generation system management. The OpenBMC image includes a bootloader (u-boot), a Linux® kernel, open source packages, and board-specific packages.

AMI already has both Aptio® V UEFI BIOS Firmware and MegaRAC® SP-X™ BMC Firmware binary packages and source code available under license for Project Olympus available to interested OEM and ODMs for integration into Intel®-based Project Olympus designs. These packages are market-ready implementations for the platform that have been thoroughly tested and validated on Project Olympus hardware.

As part of its OCP and OpenBMC activities, AMI, leveraging its substantial technical expertise gained over decades of leadership in providing BMC Firmware solutions to the industry’s leading manufacturers, along with deep knowledge of bare-metal level control and management, continues to help move OpenBMC forward and bring it closer to a production-quality level of readiness for the mass market.

With its OpenBMC initiative, AMI is pleased to announce its forthcoming product, MegaRAC® OSP™, a hardened, production-quality BMC solution. Project Olympus represents the next-generation rack-level hardware solution for hyperscale and cloud data centers, the design of which is released through the Open Compute Project (OCP). The Open Compute Project is an industry consortium spearheaded by Facebook that applies the open source model to designs for the world’s most energy efficient, scalable and affordable data centers, and shares those designs with the public.

At Open Compute Summit, the official meeting place of Open Compute Project members, Microsoft will present the latest developments and news for OpenBMC for the Project Olympus server platform, one of the cornerstones of open hardware design fostered by OCP. AMI stands in support of Microsoft as they continue to refine this hyperscale server platform design and make it market-ready through its activities in solidarity with OCP.
