NORCROSS, GA: StorTrends® today announced that National Fish & Seafood, one of the nation’s leading suppliers of seafood to distributors, retailers and restaurants, has deployed a StorTrends high performance storage area network (SAN) to ensure the resiliency and protection of its data, and consequently, its business.

National Fish & Seafood’s value to its customers and partners is directly related to its ability to not only provide the highest quality and freshest seafood, but in its consistent delivery of the highest levels of customer service. In order to help ensure these goals, National Fish & Seafood utilizes an immense implementation of Infor Adage ERP software to support its team at its headquarters office in Gloucester, Massachusetts, manage hundreds of transactions each day, control a highly sophisticated supply chain with hundreds of touch points, product SKUs, etc., as well as to support its buyers across the globe in managing thousands of supplier and partner records. Together, these systems and activity create a veritable sea of data, which can be as slippery as a freshly caught flounder to manage.

In order to help streamline management of its front office operations, National Fish & Seafood recently updated portions of its physical server infrastructure into a virtual environment. Along with easing the management burden, additional goals identified were to increase data protection and resiliency, as well as reduce cost. National Fish & Seafood then turned its attention to finding a data storage solution that would support these goals.

Working with Prevare, a leading end-to-end IT solutions provider, National Fish & Seafood evaluated a number of potentially viable solutions. In the end, StorTrends stood out and was chosen for its superior features and functionality, as well as its price. The StorTrends storage arrays, which were deployed utilizing two single controller units in a high availability (HA) configuration (SAN), delivered the required levels of resiliency, redundancy and failover protection, as well as automatic data tiering and Zoned Bit Recording for performance, an easy to manage interface via its ManageTrends™ GUI, and certified integration with Microsoft Hyper-V.

  • StorTrends High Performance Storage Serves as the Core of the University’s Transportation Services Virtualized Infrastructure

NORCROSS, GA: StorTrends® today announced that the University of Maryland’s Department of Transportation Services (DOTS) has selected StorTrends high-performance storage arrays to be the core of its newly implemented virtual infrastructure. With StorTrends, the University’s DOTS organization has been able to achieve ultra-high storage performance, true storage tiering, data deduplication and archiving, with a user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI) at a very reasonable price.

Serving over 37,000 students and 13,000 staff, as well as hundreds of daily visitors, the University of Maryland’s DOTS in College Park, MD is responsible for the day-to-day management of every single campus parking spot and the university’s fleet of more than 60 Shuttle-UM transit service vehicles. To support these valued student services, DOTS uses a number of innovative technology solutions to help streamline key processes, such as the management of university parking permits. The University of Maryland DOTS was among the first campuses in the country to implement a virtual permit system, which uses the vehicle’s license plate as its permit. To support this process, it uses license plate recognition cameras which are mounted to enforcement trucks to scan license plates to ensure they are properly parked in the correct lots. After analyzing the data in real-time, the system can alert operators when it fails to find a license plate match so that a citation can be issued.

This elaborate parking enforcement system requires a healthy amount of storage capacity and performance to remain at optimal productivity. To support the system, the University of Maryland DOTS has recently virtualized ninety percent of its infrastructure using VMware®. Today, it is comprised of 17 VMware ESX virtual servers, two physical HP servers and several Microsoft® SQL databases to support DOTS-specific shared drives and directories, the DOTS website and a host of other applications and systems, including its parking permit operations.

Until recently, the organization used an expensive SAN solution which lacked a GUI that was easy to navigate and use. As storage capacity requirements for the DOTS system continued to grow at a rapid pace, the organization determined that a more cost-efficient storage solution was required. The new solution needed to deliver major enterprise-class features together with an easy-to-use GUI. That’s when the University of Maryland DOTS discovered StorTrends.

“StorTrends was the perfect fit for my environment,” said Tim Robinson, DOTS IT Coordinator and Systems Administrator, University of Maryland Department of Transportation Services. “They had literally every single feature I was looking for: tiered storage, data dedupe and archiving, innovative data replication and WAN optimization - everything. Since implementing StorTrends, the University of Maryland DOTS has migrated its VM LUNS from their legacy storage array to the StorTrends solution. The process has been seamless, eased by the highly usable GUI and VMware Plugin. Now the department benefits from exceptional processing speeds and hasn’t even come close to touching top-end CPU/memory. Future plans for the department include purchasing additional StorTrends storage arrays to support a secondary disaster recovery site.

NORCROSS, GA / TAIPEI, TAIWAN: American Megatrends (AMI), an industry leader in UEFI and BIOS, remote management, Android™ solutions and data storage innovations, sponsored the recently held Fall 2014 edition of the UEFI PlugFest in Taipei, Taiwan from October 13-17. The UEFI PlugFest is a semi-annual interoperability testing event hosted by Unified EFI Forum (UEFI) members for attendees to gather and conduct intensive testing, as well as network and listen to presentations on the latest developments in UEFI-related technologies from industry colleagues.

Attendees covered the entire industry ecosystem, including other independent BIOS vendors (IBVs) along with peripheral manufacturers Chelsio, Nvidia, Realtek and SanDisk, OS vendors Canonical, Microsoft and SUSE, system manufacturers ASUS, Dell and teams from HP’s Server and Workstation Divisions, plus representatives of silicon manufacturers including ASMEDIA and Intel’s SSG and Mobile groups.

Hardware tested at the event included some of the latest platforms from Intel Corporation, such as upcoming versions of the Intel® Core™ M, Core™ i3/i5/i7 and Xeon™ processor series. The majority of attendees held test sessions in the on-site testing suite and reported successful/passing results. Some vendors visited the event for the purpose of getting assistance with their own internally-reported test fail issues.

Underscoring the generally positive feedback received during the event, attendees from the locally-based team from SUSE commented on their satisfaction with the event and testing with AMI platforms - particularly ARM-based 64-bit server platforms - noting that “we experienced good results on AMI's platforms. Our SUSE Taipei team is very thankful for the help from AMI’s engineers. We had a smooth testing experience at the PlugFest and hope we have more close collaboration in the UEFI server area in the future.”

  • Companies will Collaborate to Strengthen Core Root of Trust for Measurement for the Enterprise Supply Chain

Together, the four companies plan to develop advanced enterprise-class security offerings to address the escalating concerns of governments and multinational businesses.

To meet the overall objective of verifying and securing software components, these solutions will significantly strengthen the Core Root of Trust for Measurement (CRTM) to offer best-in-class protection against current and emerging pre-boot threats within the supply chain. The companies intend for these solutions to form the basis of a new industry standard designed to ensure the integrity of the supply chain.

According to the 2014 Verizon DBIR report, supply chain vulnerabilities and third-party vendors are still a leading cause of enterprise data breaches (Source, Verizon DBIR, 2014). With major brands continually leaking sensitive enterprise data, it is becoming even more critical to architect a comprehensive enterprise security suite that protects memory content from its inception in manu-facturing throughout a computing device’s life cycle. The planned software solution will integrate with the Trusted Platform Module and other hardware components to provide notification, remote management, and further remediation options for the enterprise.
