American Megatrends (AMI), a leader in storage and computing innovations, celebrates twelve years of success in providing MegaRAC® Service Processors and remote management products to premier server systems manufacturers worldwide.
AMI developed its first MegaRAC® remote management card in 1997 and shortly after was shipping in quantity to premier Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). AMI’s PCI-based MegaRAC cards were the first to combine seamless graphics and text console redirection with floppy-based virtual boot, allowing system administrators to access servers located anywhere in the world, reboot the system and, when needed, remotely install patches or the complete version of the operating system.
" The past twelve years have been filled with accomplishments and technological breakthroughs in the field of remote server management for American Megatrends’ Remote Management Group, " said Sanjoy Maity, AMI’s Vice President for IPMI and Server Management. " AMI continuously strives to be at the forefront of remote management technology and to provide OEMs with the technology and tools for building the advanced IP that underpins a sustainable competitive advantage. "
Building on the success of its original MegaRAC remote management cards, AMI maintained its position at the forefront of remote management with the launch of a second generation of PCI-based add-on cards in 2002. The MegaRAC® G2 was a truly system-independent solution that leveraged USB technology to provide complete out-of-band KVM over IP with exceptional quality. At present, AMI’s PCI-based MegaRAC remote management cards are in their fourth generation; the MegaRAC G4 continues the legacy of fast, high-quality graphical redirection at an attractive price.
AMI also utilized its expertise in remote management technology to become one of the first providers of a complete firmware stack for the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) standard for Baseboard Management Controllers (BMCs), which provides command-line access for server health monitoring and reset via side-band LAN.
Anticipating a market shift towards silicon-based service processors, in 2004 AMI worked with tier-one OEMs to introduce a Linux-based software offering of IPMI, Virtual KVM and Virtual Media running on integrated Baseboard Management Controllers (iBMCs, also known as System on Chip, or SoCs). AMI created a modular firmware, known as MegaRAC® SP, for these SoC-based Service Processors from multiple silicon vendors. Today, AMI is the leading provider of Service Processor firmware worldwide, offering sophisticated features such as Advanced IPMI, Virtual KVM, Virtual Media, SMASH-CLP, WSMAN, CIM and CIMOM that run on all of the leading integrated BMCs, including products from ASPEED, Maxim, Nuvoton, Renesas and Server Engines.
S. Shankar, President and CEO of American Megatrends, offered his thoughts on the past and future of MegaRAC remote management products from AMI with these words: " I have a deep feeling of appreciation and gratitude towards the entire MegaRAC Team within AMI; these individuals have ensured the success of our remote management products thanks to their ingenuity, hard work and dedication. These qualities made AMI the first choice of OEMs in Service Processor firmware, together with our focus on technical excellence and cutting-edge products. AMI looks forward to serving our customers with advanced MegaRAC software and hardware products for the next decade and beyond. "
