American Megatrends Releases MegaRAC® MG9082 Backplane Controller
Compliant with IBPI Specification
Friday: January 30, 2009
ATLANTA, GEORGIA – American Megatrends, a leader in storage and computing innovations, is pleased to announce the release of the MegaRAC® MG9082, the industry’s first backplane controller compliant with the International Blinking Pattern Interpretation (IBPI) Specification.
AMI’s successful family of Serial GPIO (SGPIO) backplane controller chips offers unmatched flexibility to server and storage manufacturers, providing feature-rich enclosure management coupled with drastically reduced size. Until now, such benefits were limited to entry-level and midrange systems due to the inherent technology limitations of SGPIO. To overcome such limitations, American Megatrends pioneered the introduction of IBPI, a new standard technology that extends the use of SGPIO to backplanes for high-end servers and storage backplanes. MegaRAC® MG9082 is the first backplane controller in the market that offers full compatibility with the new standard. Its breakthrough design means that backplane solutions based on MG9082 can realize valuable price and performance savings.
" With MegaRAC MG9082 AMI offers real value to the server industry. In fact, all of the major Taiwan ODMs awarded us with numerous design wins a few months after product announcement," said Clas Sivertsen, AMI’s Backplane Division Director. " IBPI compliance on top of our products’ high functional integration and reduced board estate usage enables innovative and cost-effective solutions."
The MegaRAC MG9082 manages LED indicators for up to eight SAS/SATA drives, signaling drive presence, fail and rebuild activity. Each MG9082 chip, outfitted with two SGPIO SFF8485 interfaces, drives a variety of LED configurations, including 16 or 18 LEDs directly or 24 LEDs through latches. Up to four chips can be cascaded to support 32 drives.
Like other products belonging to the MegaRAC family, the MegaRAC® MG9082 has an exceptionally small footprint, measuring only 9x9 mm. The chip integrates temperature sensor and all required peripheral components into a true single chip solution.
