American Megatrends Enhances Enclosure Management Controller Family

Friday: November 9, 2007

Editorial Summary:

  • AMI introduces MegaRAC® MG9077, a space-saving SGPIO backplane controller with LED management for up to 8 drives
  • Up to four chips can be cascaded on the same SGPIO bus to support up to 32 drives
  • SGPIO from dual SAS-expanders can be used to drive a single set of LEDs

Atlanta, GA – American Megatrends, a leader in storage and computing innovations, today introduced the space-saving MegaRAC® MG9077 Enclosure Management Controller with internal oscillator, temperature sensor and ready LED support.

AMI’s MegaRAC® MG9077 provides LED and enclosure management for entry level and mid-range servers and storage systems, with support for eight SAS or SATA drives, including ready LED signal.

"With this single chip solution the same backplane can support the full system range from entry level, where the drive ready signal is used to sense activity, through mid-range supporting all SGPIO HBAs, into high-end where the SGPIO from dual SAS-expanders is combined to drive a single set of LEDs, "said Clas Sivertsen, Director for System and Storage Products at AMI.

The chip provides extreme flexibility, scalability and high feature integration at a competitive cost:

  • comes in a small TQFP package measuring only 7x9 millimeters
  • does not require any external components, being equipped with internal oscillator, flash memory and temperature sensor
  • all enclosure management information is accessible by a host BMC through I2C/SMBUS.

AMI’s latest backplane controller is pin configurable for a wide range of configurations without the need for customized firmware for each platform.

AMI’s enclosure management controllers are compatible with any Host Bus Adapter featuring SGPIO. The controllers are tested with products from a wide range of vendors, including Adaptec®, AMCC, Broadcom®, LSI Logic, Intel®, HighPoint Technologies and NVIDIA®.
