American Megatrends Introduces Blade Chassis Management Solution at IDF San Francisco

Tuesday: September 18, 2007

Editorial Summary:

  • AMI introduces MegaRAC® CM, a blade chassis management solution compliant with the SSI Open Blade Architecture System Management Specification
  • MegaRAC CM firmware stack provides advanced SSI Chassis management, including power and cooling management, failover support and board management

Intel® Developer Forum, San Francisco, CA – American Megatrends, a leader in storage and computing innovations, today introduced the MegaRAC® CM SSI-compliant Chassis Management Firmware Solution at Intel® Developer Forum (IDF) Fall 2007, booth 247 (September 18-20, Moscone Center, San Francisco, CA).

" AMI worked with Intel for more than a year to jointly develop an advanced Chassis Management Solution that will be fully compliant with the Open Blade Architecture System Management Specification from the SSI Forum, " said Sanjoy Maity, American Megatrends Vice President of Software Engineering. " result of this collaboration is MegaRAC® CM, a robust, feature-rich chassis management firmware stack for OEMs and ODMs that plan to design advanced server blades supporting the latest industry standards, including SSI management, IPMI 2.0, SMASH-CLP and WS-Management. "

" The Server System Infrastructure modular computing open specifications are enabling increased vendor participation in the blade server segment which is expected to more than double over the next three years, " said Jason Waxman, General Manager of High Density Computing at Intel. " AMI’s MegaRAC CM will provide advanced functionality and high availability on energy efficient Intel-based server blades and is a welcome addition to the SSI industry ecosystem. "

The MegaRAC CM firmware stack implements the draft System Management Specification from the Server System Infrastructure Forum, a group that is comprised of over 185 industry members. The Forum aims to disseminate a series of specifications detailing standardized components and interfaces for server blades. Over 50 server technology providers adopted its recent announcement of modular computing specifications. This open specification will promote lower R&D costs and open the market to a broader set of vendors to innovate, ultimately giving more modular computing platform choices at better prices to small businesses and data centers alike.

MegaRAC CM provides advanced features like failover support, advanced power and cooling management, virtual BMC for faster access to blade data and support for software management standards such as IPMI 2.0, SMASH/CLP and WS-Man.

With its extensive experience in remote management, AMI can provide OEMs and ODMs with the building blocks and expertise for designing the complete management firmware infrastructure for their blade server projects. MegaRAC CM is part of AMI’s BladeBrix™ offering, which also includes the MegaRAC SP Service Processor firmware stack for highly integrated baseboard management controllers (BMCs). MegaRAC SP is available for market-leading BMCs such as ASPEED Technologies, Server Engines™, Renesas Technology, Vitesse Semiconductor and Winbond, and includes high-quality KVM/IP video redirection, virtual media for remote software installation, IPMI 2.0, SMASH Command Line Protocol support and WSMAN support.

AMI offers a complete line of world-class porting tools to simplify the porting and customization cycle for OEMs and ODMs. The MegaRAC® DS software development environment includes PMCP, a tool for graphical layout of the sensors that aids platform porting, tools for creating and customizing a Web-based interface, SMASH CLP and WSMAN SDK (Software Development Kit). MegaRAC DS is designed as a set of plug-ins based on the industry favorite Eclipse, a Java™-based software framework widely utilized by software developers.
