ATLANTA, GEORGIA - American Megatrends Inc. (AMI), a leading provider of computer technologies, announced today its Aptio® firmware code-base will support the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) 2.0 Specification, an advanced model for the interface between operating system and platform firmware.
American Megatrends Inc., along with leading OEMs and technology providers, is a promoter of the UEFI specification, which defines a standard environment for booting an operating system and running pre-boot applications.
The UEFI specification, aimed at improving interoperability between platforms and add-in cards, supersedes the Extensible Firmware Interface 1.1 specification, originally published by Intel Corporation. The Extensible Firmware Interface, at the base of AMI’s Aptio firmware offering, introduces a new firmware paradigm based on modular drivers that aims to modernize the BIOS technology that has been utilized to hand off system control to personal computer’s operating system for more than 20 years. UEFI represents the extension of this interface by an industry forum.
"AMI is proud to have worked on the updated and open UEFI v2.0 specification," said Brian Richardson, representative for American Megatrends on the UEFI Board of Directors. "AMI sees this standard as valuable to our next-generation firmware products. Many of our engineers contributed to elaborate the content of this specification. AMI is actively working to incorporate UEFI 2.0 into our Aptio firmware code-base."
Stefano Righi, American Megatrends Software Utilities director, added: "AMI brings more than 20 years of BIOS and firmware experience to the industry. The customer has been the central reference for all our choices in Aptio, with the objective of simplifying the transition to the new software model, making it as smooth as possible. The Aptio offering comes with a rich set of tools that present the same look and feel that our customers utilize in BIOS development. This minimizes the training required by engineers to master the Aptio development process."
