NORCROSS, GA: StorTrends® the world’s proven leader in all-flash arrays (AFA), hybrid storage, and spinning disk solutions, today announced that Advanced Motors and Drives (AMD), a premier designer and manufacturer of customized motors for battery-powered vehicles, has deployed a StorTrends high-performance storage area network (SAN) across its primary and remote backup datacenters to support its continued growth and evolving product line.
In addition to serving industrial, recreational and utility vehicle manufacturers, AMD is also on the cutting edge of clean “green” motor manufacturing. Staffed by a team of hundreds of designers, engineers, IT professionals and administrative staff, its upstate New York design and manufacturing facilities are supported by primary and remote datacenters. These datacenters utilize a wide range of enterprise applications, across a heterogeneous infrastructure made up of Red Hat® Linux® servers, a BlackBerry® Enterprise server, and various IBM servers. In addition, AMD relies on Windows®-compatible Samba to help support and manage its end user desktop, laptop and printer environment. Until the StorTrends SAN deployment, AMD had relied almost exclusively on tape-based backup. However, as AMD continued to grow it recognized that not only was tape backup a resource draining process, they also faced the risk that if they should experience an outage or disaster event, their information and applications would be unavailable for an unacceptable period of time - if not lost forever.
“The tape backup approach became a bottleneck, so we created a rotating schedule to backup different applications on different days. But this led to periods of time when no backups existed for some apps,” explained Tom Flood, IT Manager at Advanced Motors and Drives.
To augment, disk-based backup was also used but not moved to a safe location until the tape backup was moved. Restoration was complicated and time consuming, and consequently avoided whenever possible. As this was not a long-term tenable solution, given the company’s rapid growth and business criticality of applications and information, Flood began the search for a technologically viable solution, which would also meet its stringent budget requirements. After a careful review of available solutions, and a successfully executed performance proof of concept (POC), Flood chose and deployed a StorTrends high performance SAN across its primary and remote datacenters.
“StorTrends, with its easy and intuitive GUI, makes SAN deployment and management really simple – we had it up and running in about 15 minutes,” said Flood. “You don’t need a special degree to create volumes in StorTrends. It’s completed in just a few clicks. And, with a few more clicks, you’ve got that same volume replicated safely offsite.”
AMD now has six thin provisioned volumes, since StorTrends allows for both thin and exact provisioning, for a total capacity of over 3.5 terabytes (TB). Each StorTrends has useable 11 TB capacity, including a hot spare drive. Data is now consistently replicated every day, with the StorTrends Snap-Assisted Replication (SAR) feature. With StorTrends SAR, an original point-in-time copy of data is first replicated; after that, only changed data is captured and replicated in order to expedite the backup process, reduce performance overhead, and eliminate backup storage redundancy.
“Whereas previously backup was a tedious chore that was time intensive, expensive, and less than reliable, StorTrends has provided AMD with a high performance solution for fast and consistent data backup, at a dramatically lower cost. For instance, a directory of thousands of product drawings in PDF format now takes just a couple seconds to be fully backed up – with future backups consisting of only the changes to these files,” said Justin Bagby, Director of the StorTrends division of American Megatrends (AMI). “Moreover, StorTrends has provided AMD with the flexibility to grow its storage environment how and when it needs to, whether they require all-flash, hybrid flash or spinning disk to support their application and budgetary requirements.”

NORCROSS, GA, USA - American Megatrends, Inc. (AMI), a global leader in BIOS, remote management and network data storage solutions, is pleased to introduce a new solution for its flagship Aptio® V UEFI Firmware that is compatible with the NIST SP 800-155 “BIOS Integrity Measurement Guidelines”.
In its Special Publication 800-155, NIST outlines the fundamentals of BIOS integrity measurement. This description includes a method to determine if the BIOS has been modified as well as the method for reporting and mitigating attacks against the BIOS.
"These guidelines describe what is needed to establish a chain of trust for the BIOS," commented Subramonian Shankar, President and CEO of American Megatrends. “In accordance with the NIST SP 800-155 guidelines, our Aptio V Firmware solution provides a means of generating and collecting the original BIOS measurements, called ‘the Golden Measurement Generation’, along with a means of storing the measurements that is either tamper-resistant or tamper-evident, called ‘the Collection Agent’ and a means of conveying the measurements to an analyzing agent, called the ‘Transmission and Reporting Agents’.”
“Our goal in developing a NIST SP 800-155 compatible solution for Aptio V was to demonstrate to our customers that AMI is deeply committed to developing the most secure and tamper-resistant UEFI solutions available in the market today,” he commented.

NORCROSS, GA: StorTrends® today announced that that its high performance storage area network (SAN) storage appliances have been implemented by First Option Mortgage to affordably support and manage the three-tier storage structure of its newly virtualized datacenter. Using StorTrends, First Option Mortgage has seen dramatic value across its Tier II and Tier III data stores, making its journey to datacenter virtualization seamless and efficient.
Based in Atlanta, Georgia, First Option Mortgage has a national footprint with a growing family of more than 200 employees. With continued expansion, the mortgage firm’s IT team was experiencing the strain of its continued expansion. The company’s data center was completely physical just a few years ago, but with growth the team saw the need to virtualize. Today, First Option is almost fully virtual and has nearly 100 VMware® ESX servers serving its business applications.
This growing environment needed to better support its storage infrastructure. As a way to avoid overburdening its storage resources, the organization implemented three tiers of storage: Tier I is used to support its absolute mission-critical data which is accessed hourly and daily. Tier II storage is employed to manage frequently accessed, but non-priority data and Tier III storage is used to serve its backup and archiving processes.
When it came time for First Option to find a solution that would efficiently support its tiered data structure, they needed a system that was reliable and simple to use. It also needed to be VMware compatible and affordable. StorTrends SAN solutions became the number one choice.
The GUI of the StorTrends ManageTrends software caught the attention of Matt Berry, Vice President of IT for First Option Mortgage, “The StorTrends ManageTrends GUI is absolutely the best GUI I’ve seen. It’s ridiculously easy to use. That and StorTrends’ highly affordable pricing made it a compelling product for our Tier II and III needs.”
First Option is now using two StorTrends arrays with SATA drives to support Tier II and Tier III data, managing roughly 16 TBs of total capacity. “The StorTrends solutions at First Option have been a very good investment. The SANs do exactly as promised. For the money and ease of use, StorTrends is a real value,” added Barry.
“The StorTrends solutions are ideally suited for the tiered data management structures in today’s enterprises. They offer the high performance and reliability needed to robustly serve mission critical data, and the cost effectiveness to also deliver an exceptional ROI for Tier III applications,” said Justin Bagby, Director of the StorTrends Division at American Megatrends, Inc. (AMI). “For organizations such as First Option Mortgage, this means exceptional performance with the simplicity and management ease of a common solution.”
